5 Questions to Ask Before Moving into Senior Living

April 8, 2021

Are you considering moving into a senior living community? While this is an exciting transition, the information can sometimes be overwhelming. Here are five questions to ask about a senior living community before deciding to move in.

  • What is the staff to resident ratio?

Learning more about the care team and clinical staff can give residents and their loved ones insights into the quality of care being offered before moving in. You may want to ask about the staff’s background, training, and experience within the community.

  • Who are the health professionals associated with the community?

Learning about the health and clinical professionals and their areas of expertise and specialties can help answer any health related questions you may have. Also, this allows you to understand how care is delivered.

  • What social activities are available?

One of the most important draws to a senior living community is the ability to create community and socialize with other residents. Be sure to ask what kind of classes, activities, events, and/or outings the community offers.

  • Can I talk to a current community member?

Asking to connect with a current community member or their family is a great way to get a first-hand account of what the community is like. Current residents or their family members may also be able to answer questions you didn’t realize you have about day-to-day living. Plus, it’s always nice to make a connection before moving in!

  • What is the cost?

Each community has a different monthly cost and that price tag can include a variety of amenities. Asking about the monthly base rent and what is included is important, as there are amenities that may be an additional cost. This might include transportation services, supplies, or personal grooming services.

Note that many senior living communities also have additional fees, such as care fees, amenity fees, and more, so be sure to ask if other fees are involved with monthly costs.
